My First Aquaponics System

I have just added a grow-bed to my backyard fish-pond by diverting the pump water through it. This should then provide hydroponic-style plant growth without all the mucking about with chemicals because the fish waste provides the nutrients. The plants also clean and oxygenate the water for the fish. It’s such an elegant idea I have long wanted to try it out.

  1. After 10 days, the water is crystal clear, the fish seem happy, and the plants have lots of new growth so it looks good. I've had to add 5-10ml of vinegar every day to keep the pH down near 7. I also read that it may take 4-6 weeks for the right bacteria to develop and until then there can be high levels of chemicals toxic to fish, so I spent $17 on a bottle of "good" bacteria from the fish shop to help kick things along.
